Dayton, OH – The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission’s 2019 Tornado Recovery Monitoring System was awarded the 2023 Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) Exemplary Systems in Government (ESIG) Distinguished System Award.
The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) Exemplary Systems in Government (ESIG) awards recognize outstanding achievement by government agencies in the use of geospatial information technology. This exemplary achievement is defined as the effective application of geospatial technologies and data that result in improved government service delivery and increased benefits to citizens.
“The 2019 Tornado Recovery Monitoring System revolutionized the way our Region tracks recovery from the natural disaster. It allowed our Region to achieve an efficient and effective way of distributing limited resources” stated Brian O. Martin, AICP, MVRPC Executive Director. Martin continued, “I am proud and grateful to have this opportunity to share our story of dedication, innovation, resiliency, and collaboration. The system and the data contained therein memorialize this event and show future generations how the tornadoes impacted the Miami Valley and how we responded and recovered”.
Components of the 2019 Tornado Recovery Monitoring System include a region-wide database of affected people and properties; mapping applications for recovery coordination management; and public – facing recovery monitoring dashboards. These components provided critical data and information to recovery networks, elected officials, and the public.
The accomplishments of all ESIG award recipients were recognized at the GIS-Pro 2023: URISA's 61st Annual Conference held October 16-19, 2023, in Columbus, Ohio.
