Dayton, OH – The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) will be participating in National Air Quality Awareness Week, May 6 through May 10, 2024. In partnership with the U.S. EPA and Air Now, MVRPC will share messages in accordance to this year’s theme, “Knowing Your Air”. Follow the hashtag #AQAW2024 on MVRPC’s Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X social media pages for posts each day to learn more about Air Quality Awareness Week. This annual observance aims to educate communities about the importance of air quality and promote actions to improve it.

As part of the celebration for Air Quality Awareness Week and to promote commute options that reduce air pollution, Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is offering free trips for all riders on Monday, May 6, 2024. The free rides on May 6 apply to both RTA’s fixed-route and paratransit services.

"We are excited to participate in Air Quality Awareness Week and engage our community in important conversations about air quality and alternate commuting modes," said Brian O. Martin, Executive Director of MVRPC. "By working together to reduce air pollution and promote sustainable transportation options, we can create a healthier and more vibrant region for future generations."

Air quality plays a crucial role in the health and well-being of residents across the Miami Valley Region. Poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and exacerbate existing health conditions. 

MVRPC encourages residents to join in the effort to improve air quality by:

• Using alternative transportation modes such as biking, walking, or carpooling.
• Keeping your vehicle tuned and well maintained. A tuned engine produces lower emissions, runs more efficiently, and will last longer
• Avoiding letting your vehicle idle.
• Refueling your vehicle in the evening when smog is less likely to form.

In our Region, on days when air pollution levels are forecasted to be high, MVRPC, in conjunction with Regional Air Pollution Control Agency (RAPCA), will issue an Air Quality Alert (AQA). RAPCA is responsible for monitoring and reporting air quality readings in Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Darke, Preble and Clark Counties. Poor air quality affects everyone; however, some individuals are particularly sensitive to air pollutants, including children and adults who are active outdoors, older adults, and those with chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma. It’s especially important on AQA days that older adults, young children and those with breathing problems modify behavior and limit outdoor time.
