Dayton, OH – The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) is excited to announce the release of A Summary of Going Places – An Integrated Land Use Vision for the Miami Valley Region at our August 6, 2015, Board of Directors meeting.
“Our Board of Directors recognized the need to develop a regional plan for the Miami Valley as a whole. This led to a regional land use planning initiative entitled Going Places,” explained MVRPC’s Executive Director, Brian O. Martin, AICP. “Through many types of forums, we asked community members and representatives from businesses, local governments, and organizations across the Region, what they want the Region to look like and what was needed to make it a reality. It was essential that this regional plan be built on a shared vision supported by a strong foundation of data and analysis, and it definitely was,” Martin continued.
The summary of Going Places outlines the process taken and final recommendations including the shared regional vision known as the Concentrated Development Vision. Basic guiding principles expressed by all involved included:
- Build on the Region’s many assets;
- Maximize the use of existing infrastructure;
- Preserve agricultural land and open space; and
- Encourage community connection and cooperation
Making this vision a reality is the next step. Eleven (11) implementation tools were developed to address what is missing and what is needed to support the Concentrated Development Vision.
The Implementation Tools address these major needs:
- Providing better information for strong decision making
- Strengthening regional collaboration
- Building the Region’s capacity for solutions

“Our staff’s role will vary depending upon the tool. We may serve as lead agency, a partner, convener and facilitator, or in a supporting role. At the beginning of development of each tool, we will draw upon the expertise and insight from the deep well of participating agencies. We have started assisting a few member jurisdictions on their strategic or comprehensive plans and GIS. We hope to fulfill other needs throughout the Miami Valley Region as our staff availability and budget allows.” stated Martin.
