Explore the Region’s bike community resources with MVRPC and Bike Miami Valley.
The Miami Valley Region is a great place to bike. As we kick off bike month, we wanted to review some available resources. Watch this video to learn about resources for the bike community like education programs, bike rentals, and where to find maps of the Region’s trails.
Your Input Sought for the Statewide Transportation Plan: Access Ohio 2045 (AO45)
There will be two regional input meetings on May 8, 2018 at MVRPC offices, 10 N. Ludlow Street, Suite 700, in Dayton. The first will be a Workshop for Public Officials from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Any locally elected official or representative from a public / government entity is invited to participate. At the workshop, the AO45 team will lead the participants through an exercise to develop scenarios ODOT will use for the Statewide Transportation Plan.
The second event will be a Public Meeting held later in the day from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Since the public meeting will be open house style, there will not be a formal workshop exercise. However, there will be at least one short presentation at 5:30 pm. The public will have the opportunity to comment on the scenarios under development and provide input on emerging trends in transportation.
Please feel free to check out the AO45 website and refer others to it for more information at access.ohio.gov.
If you intend to participate in the Workshop for Public Officials, please be sure to visit the Access Ohio public website at access.ohio.gov and register.
If you are unable to attend the Public Meeting, but would like to provide input, you can participate in a survey at surveymonkey.com/r/ohio-transportation-trends.
Grants & Funding Resources
On a monthly basis, MVRPC highlights new funding opportunities on our website at mvrpc.org/grant-and-funding-opportunities. These grant and funding opportunities were found through the Grantfinder software. A description, contact information and program links are included on these new sources. In addition, the website includes other valuable resources for your funding pursuits. This month we are featuring information on:
- Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grants – Deadline: June 12, 2018.
- New Funding for Water Infrastructure Projects – Deadline: July 6, 2018.
If you need assistance with your grant pursuit or further research, please contact Martin Kim, Director of Regional Planning, at 937.223.6323 or mkim@mvrpc.org.
MVRPC Staff Pursues Can and Bottle Recycling
Over the past month, the agency has ramped up its efforts to be more environmentally responsible and live up to our Sustainability Goals. Our Sustainable Solutions & Transportation Alternatives (SSTA) staff organized an outing to the Montgomery County Solid Waste Transfer Facility to gain a better understanding of the Region’s solid waste issues and to inspire a renewed commitment to recycling in our office.
The transfer facility handles over 1,500 tons per day of residential solid waste from every jurisdiction in Montgomery County, as well as some commercial solid waste and waste streams from neighboring counties. Staff was able to observe the trash floor in action (pictured) and tour the education center. If nothing else, the experience made an impression and emphasized the importance of the “Reduce-Reuse-Recycle” mindset. John Woodman, from the Montgomery County Solid Waste, presented me with a pair of recycling bins for use in our offices.
Staff has embraced the call to recycling in our offices. In the month since we received the bins, we have filled each one once. At five pounds per bin, we are keeping more material out of landfills and in the recycling economy. Many thanks to Kim Lahman and the SSTA staff for pulling the event and recycling effort together.
Website: New Miami Valley Equity Initiative and Regional Profiles Pages
In April, MVRPC launched a new Miami Valley Equity Initiative webpage, mvrpc.org/equity-initiative.
This initiative aims to further our focus to revitalize communities, connect people to resources, and improve economic vitality and socioeconomic mobility. This new webpage serves as the main gateway you can use to review the findings we are sharing from the Equity Profile and to engage in dialogues on how we can take collaborative actions to address our existing inequity. It also highlights our recent activities and includes various local and national resources. We hope this new page will facilitate further conversation and thoughtful actions as we move forward.
MVRPC also updated the Regional Profiles page, mvrpc.org/regional-profiles. This update allows us to better communicate, provide enhanced access, and accommodate the growing number of regional profiles published.
The Regional Profiles touch on many important aspects of our Region, such as its infrastructure, environment, economy, and social characteristics. Each profile has two products - a print version and a dynamic web-based infographic suitable for both desktop and mobile devices. Interactive web maps are also available to present detailed data for different parts of the Region.
