b'MVRPC 2023 ANNUAL REPORTREGIONAL STEWARDSHIPDisaster Resiliency Planning Workshops Hosted by MVRPCAs the Region pivots from recovery to resiliency, MVRPC has been providing resources and training opportunities for representatives across the Region.MVRPC held a regional resiliency planning workshop on May 11, 2023, that focused on building a recovery network for communities planning for future disasters. This work identified partners and their roles during disaster response as well as goals that should be considered during each phase. It will help shape the larger resiliency plan for the region to help all of our members prepare for and respond faster to future hazards and threats. On May 17, 2023, MVRPC in partnership with the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) hosted a FEMA Planning for Long-Term Housing workshop. This workshop centered around planning for long-term and transitional housing after a major disaster. Representatives from the Columbia Climate School and National Center for Disaster Preparedness conducted the training. Attendees includedlocal housing representatives, county EMA managers and local government representatives. The workshops focus was on the importance of pre-planning for housing recovery to accelerate recovery after a disaster occurs. Participants gained a better understanding of resources available to assist in recovery as well as how partnerships with the private sector can assist in housing investments.Final RETREET Plantings for Disaster Recovery Efforts and Community CelebrationIn April and September of 2023 the final tree planting events were held to help restore the tree landscape after the 2019 Memorial Day tornadoes. Over the course of the last three years, more than 700 trees have been planted at homes across three counties, in over 15 communities and at two community parks. MVRPC staff and Board of Directors members attended the Community Celebration which was held following the final planting to thank all those involved in the RETREET event. The success of this restorative work could not have been possible without the strong collaborative nature of the Miami Valley!Disaster Recovery Leadership Board Ends AfterSuccessful LeadershipOn September 15, 2023, the Disaster Recovery Leadership Board (DRLB) voted to end their oversight work related to the recovery of the 2019 Memorial Day tornadoes. Since March 2020, the board helped to guide and provide donor and community transparency on the recovery work. As a result of this strategic leadership and the strong commitment to ensure recovery as a top priority, property recovery rates exceed 97%. Additionally, over $660,000 has been allocated from the Greater Dayton Disaster Relief Fund for community recovery projects to jurisdictions and programs to aid in restoring parks, removing blighted structures damaged by the tornadoes, and planting trees at the homes of tornado survivors. We are very proud to have been involved with our Regions recovery and this community-wide party was a fitting way to close out the public phase of the recovery.
