US 35 Corridor Improvements
Montgomery County
In 2004, the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission in cooperation with ODOT, conducted the US 35 Corridor Major Investment Study (MIS), to identify improvements to the US 35 corridor from I-75 to I-675.
The current project, MOT-35-18-57, focuses on the recommendations of the MIS for US 35 between Steve Whalen Boulevard and the I-675 interchange (see study area) following ODOT's Project Development Process (PDP). The PDP provides a framework for decision making to take a project from the planning stages to construction. The project is currently moving through the environmental analysis and preliminary engineering phases.
The purpose of the project is to:
- Reduce peak hour congestion and
- Improve safety throughout the corridor by
- Correction geometric deficiencies,
- Improving lane continuity, and
- Reducing crashes
Public Involvement
In its ongoing efforts to improve the safety and efficiency of the transportation network, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is working on a project to improve United States Route 35 from the Steve Whalen interchange to Interstate 675. As with any project, input and involvement from the public is vital to the successful development of solutions. The MOT-35-18.57 project is following ODOT’s 10-Step Project Development Process for Minor Projects. Up to this point, ODOT and its consultant team have worked closely with local officials and stakeholders to develop and evaluate improvement alternatives for the corridor.
Public Meeting Summary, August 27, 2009
ODOT and MVRPC appreciate the effort and time of citizens to provide input into the project development process. ODOT intends to proceed with design of Alternative 3. This alternative will include the addition of through lanes on US 35, reconfiguration of the Smithville Road interchange to a partial cloverleaf interchange, and reconfiguration of the Woodman Drive interchange to a Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI). ODOT has determined to leave the Dayton-Xenia/ Linden Avenue ramps open, as current data do not indicate that these ramps degrade the operation of US 35 or have contributed to accidents on US 35. A document including a Public Meeting Summary, Frequently Asked Questions, and Preferred Alternative design, is available.
The public was invited to attend a meeting at Carroll High School from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, August 27, 2009 to review the alternatives and evaluation criteria, and to share any questions, concerns, or other input regarding the project. The meeting was held in an open house format with exhibits of the alternatives and data collected on hand for review. Representatives from ODOT and project consultant team were available to respond to questions and comments.
Information presented at the meeting:
- Comparison of Alternatives
- Project Phasing
- Corridor Alternative 1
- Corridor Alternative 2
- Corridor Alternative 3
- Recommended Alternative – Steve Whalen to Smithville
- Recommended Alternative – Woodman to I-675
- Single Point Urban Interchange proposed for Woodman Ave.
A Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) has been proposed for the Woodman Ave. interchange on US 35. An animation of how a SPUI works is available here.
